DIGITAL SIGNALS

DIGITAL SIGNALS

Digital signals are a type of signal that represents data as a series of discrete values typically in the form of binary code of 0s and 1s rather than a continuous variable.

There are several types of digital signals and they are; binary, multi-level, and encoded digital signals.

Binary digital signals are a type of digital signal that represents data using only two discrete values typically represented as 0 and 1. Example of application of binary digital signals includes; digital logic signals, computer data signals, digital communication signals etc.

Multi-level digital signals are a type of digital signal that represents data using more than two discrete values, such as quaternary, octal and multi-level signals. Example of their applications includes; digital audio, digital communication and data storage signals etc.

Encoded digital signals are a type of digital signal that represents data using a specific encoding scheme such as, non-return to zero (NRZ) signals, non-return to zero inverted (NRZI) signals, Manchester signals etc. Example of their applications includes; digital communication, data storage and digital audio signals etc.

The advantages of digital signals are; digital signals are less susceptible to noise and interference which makes them more reliable than analog signals. Digital signals can be easily processed and manipulated using digital signal processing (DSP) techniques. Digital signals can be transmitted with high accuracy making them suitable for applications that requires precise data transmission. Digital signals can be easily stored, transmitted and retrieved which makes them suitable for a wide range of applications. Digital signals can be easily encrypted which makes them more secure than analog signals. Multiple digital signals can be combined and transmitted over a single channel more efficiently than analog signals.

The disadvantages of digital signals are; digital signals require a higher bandwidth than analog signals to transmit the same amount of information. Digital signals require complex circuitry and software to process and transmit, which can increase their cost and size. Digital signals suffer from quantization error which occurs when the amplitude of the signals is not accurately represented. Digital systems require analog to digital converters (ADC), digital to analog converters (DACs), clocks and synchronization circuitry, thereby adding complexity and cost.  Digital systems consume more power than simple analog circuit which limits their applications especially for battery powered devices.

The application of digital signals is as follows; digital signals are used in communication devices and systems such as telephone networks, satellite communications, smartphones and computer networks. Digital signals are used in audio and video systems such as digital audio players, digital cameras and digital TVs. Digital signals are used in medical equipment and systems such as electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, ultra sound machines and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines. Digital signals are used extensively in industrial control systems, robotics, motion and process control systems. Digital signals are used in security systems such as digital surveillance systems, biometric monitoring systems, encrypted communication systems and wireless communication networks. Digital signals are used in consumer electronics such as digital audio streaming, digital camera imaging and so on.

The future of digital signals is based on the advances and development of the following technologies; digital signals will play a vital role in internet of thing (IoT) systems, which involves connecting devices and sensors to the internet. Digital signals will be used in 5G and 6G networks which will promise faster data rates, lower latency and greater connectivity. Digital signals will be used in artificial intelligence applications such as deep learning and machine learning to enable the accelerated processing of information, transmission and control especially in robotic systems. Digital signals will be employed in quantum computing which has the potential to revolutionize computing and data processing in the future.
